What is "Mission to Geek Out"?

"B FLAT!!!!!"

...yells Mr. Thomlinson, my angry piano teacher, as I hit another wrong key during my piano lesson.

At the time, I didn't understand why it was so important to my mom that I take piano lessons.  In fact, it felt like a bit much on top of the other sports and activities I was doing.

My mom was one of five children, with a single working mother, growing up in East LA.  Her only "afterschool activities" included watching her younger brothers and sisters, until she was old enough to get a job and help out that way.

I remember her saying how she wished she would have learned to play the piano.  It wasn’t until I was an adult, that I realized how much I took those piano lessons for granted.

And then it hit me...

Extracurricular activities are not even an option for some children.

And yet, these activities play a pivotal role in teaching kids resilience, teamwork and believing in themselves.

What can we do about that?

That's why we created "Mission to Geek Out".  There are two primary objectives:

#1

We are funding scholarships for extracurricular activities for low-income families so that their kids can “geek out” in the summer camp activity of their choice.

Our first stop on this journey is paying for kids to attend Science Camp at the Discovery Science Cube in Santa Ana, CA.

We are also applying for matching grant programs, so stay tuned!

#2

Most people associate the word "geek out" with being annoying or socially awkward.

Here's the actual definition:

To behave in a very enthusiastic way about something that you are interested in and know a lot about.

For some reason, caring about something that matters to you doesn’t have the same importance as fitting in.  Things like having the latest iPhone or posting pictures of a fancy dinner get more social acceptance.

BUT, imagine this, if as children we grew up differently. Rather than loving what we have or what we can buy, embracing what we are interested in and getting to fully express our enthusiasm about it!

The world just might be a better place for us all to live in.

Nerding out isn't something to be ashamed of. It’s something to be proud of and gives people around you permission to geek out too!

So while you are becoming a computer wizard with our Keyboard Quick shortcut cards, you're also part of our mission to geek out.  :)

Every deck of Keyboard Quick cards purchased contributes 20% towards scholarships for children to attend summer camp, that otherwise wouldn't be able to afford it.

Thank you for being on this mission with me.  My mom passed away unexpectedly a few years ago.  I know this purpose is something she would have wanted to be a part of.  Now her impact gets to expand through all of us.  💕

Much love,

Rosa
